  10. Mac Lab 101 General Use: The Front

  11. Mac Lab 101 General Use: The Back

  12. Mac Lab 101 • *To start the computer, click on the mouse or keyboard to bring out of sleep. If the machine is off, hold down the power button on the back left for a second and wait for machine to boot. • *To put to sleep, click on the Apple button and select “sleep” or push the power button on the back. • *To turn off, click on Apple button and selection “shut down.” Then, click “shut down” again. • *If your mouse or keyboard disconnect, try turning them off, then back on. • *If your mouse or keyboard give you a message that batteries are low, keep working until they die, then tell me. • *If a program locks up, try right clicking on the program icon in the dock and selecting “force quit.” • *If your computer locks up, try holding down the power button on the back and re-booting. • *To print, just select print – the computer is already mapped to the B/W printer in the room. • *When using external USB drives, plug them into the back left of the machine. An icon for your device should show on the desktop. If not, you can go to the “finder” icon on the dock and look for your device under “devices” on the lower left hand side of the finder window. • *When you are done with an external USB device, right click on its icon on the desktop and select “eject,” or hit the eject button next to the device on the left side of the finder window.

  13. Mac Lab 101 Apple Menu: The Apple Menu is used solely for access to System Preferences, Shutdown, Restart, Logout and other Finder preferences.

  14. Mac Lab 101 The Dock: The Dock is where applications are.

  15. Mac Lab 101 The Desktop: The Desktop is where the link to the alias will be. There will also be a link to the ExtendScriptToolKit

  16. Mac Lab 101 Finder: Where you find applications, files (documents, videos, photos, etc), and plugged in devices. Anything on your Mac can be found here. It’s like your search window. Tip:If you misplaced a file or don’t know where you saved it, open finder and enter a keyword in the search field. Thus, you should always label your work with your name and a keyword. That’s seems easy and logical enough, right? Label it right when you begin by saving your file. Then save frequently in case a computer crashes! It’s as simple as going to FILE > SAVE. Or, clicking COMMAND + S on the keyboard. Do it early and often! When unplugging a device on a Mac, you must “eject” it!

  17. Mac Lab 101 Open the alias folder on the desktop and FINDER will open to show subfolders within that folder. Find your folder and work within. Double click to open a project. You can also access downloads, applications and external devices on the left side of FINDER If you have trouble connecting to the alias drive, ask Mr. Capp for help.

  18. Mac Lab 101 To Close or Minimize a Program’s Window (upper left hand corner. x = close / - = Minimize): To Close a Program altogether, you must QUIT it.: When you minimize a window, it goes down here near the trash can Tip: the small light under the program icon in the dock shows you the programs you are running. Even if a window is not open

  19. Mac Lab 101 Get to know keyboard short cuts. They are huge time savers!! The Command Key is the like a PC’s Control Key Command + S = Save Command + C = Copy Command + X = Cut Command + V = Paste Command + Z = Undo Command + Q = Quit Command + Shift + 4 = Screen Shot Plus, each program has it’s own specific sets of short cut keys that we’ll learn

  20. Mac Lab 101 To Delete a File: Drag it to the trash can in the dock or right click on the file and select “Move to Trash.” If your file is missing or you accidentally deleted it, always open the trash can and find it in there. It won’t truly be deleted from the computer until the trash is emptied. Don’t empty the trash. I will do that!

  21. Review Login: NEWSPAPER Password: TRIBAL Logout when finished - Never leave the newspaper open for other students to see! Save all work to alias drive. Do not make ANY computer adjustments without my permission!
