The Way We See Technology Olivia Smith & Leah Dettmer Spring 2o12
Introduction Technology is something that makes our everyday lives easier and more productive. Technology can also be entertaining. Scientists aren’t the only ones who invent things. People who have good ideas can also invent useful things.
Eyeglasses Eyeglasses were invented by Giordano daPisa in 1280. Depending on your vision, eyeglasses can help you in many ways. They can help you see near, far, or if you have a stigmatism. If you have double vision, prisms can be ground into the lenses so that your vision is corrected. Since glasses were first invented, many other ways to see have been invented. Bi and trifocals, progressives, contacts, Lasik surgery, cataract surgery and other forms of surgery make peoples’ everyday lives the way they are now.
Braille Braille was invented by Louis Braille in 1834. Braille is a series of raised dots that represent the alphabet. Without Braille, blind people would not be able to read. With Braille, they can read and attend school.
Antibiotics Antibiotics were invented by Alexander Fleming in 1928. They help us deal with infection. Before antibiotics, populations of entire towns would get wiped out. Antibiotics also helped doctors fight disease. Doctors used to cut a vein open and bleed patients with infections. Sometimes people would die from blood loss. Now you see how important antibiotics are to our everyday lives.
Refrigerator The electric refrigerator was introduced by Frigidaire in 1923. Without the refrigerator, it is hard to preserve food. Before the refrigerator, people put their food in iceboxes. Iceboxes slowly evolved into the modern electric refrigerator.
The Browser The browser was invented by Tim Bersners –Lee in 1990. The browser is software that gives you access to the worldwide web so you can freely use the internet. Some of the major browsers are Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and I.E.
E-mail E-mail was invented by Hailey Cramer in 1993. E-mail is really useful because of the speed with which the communication is delivered. Like almost everything on the internet, e-mail has its ups and downs. One bad thing is that viruses can spread fast through any E-mail source. The way it does that is when you open a E-mail with a virus, it goes to your contact list and sends a virus to all of your contacts. The good thing is you can instantly send messages to others. It can also be used for business or personal communications.
Windows Windows was invented by Gary Kildall in 1995. Before windows you could only open one website or file at a time. Now you can open several windows documents, your e-mail and have Facebook open all at once. This is all thanks to windows!!
Wi-Fi Wi-Fi was invented by Vic Hays in 1999. Wi-Fi helps us connect to the internet without using wires. One example is laptops with wireless cards. They use Wi-Fi to connect to the internet without using wires. But sometimes, you do have to use wires when you are not in a Wi-Fi hot spot, where Wi-Fi can be used. Plus, without the wires, you can take your laptop with you where ever you go. Thank you, Wi-Fi!
Google Google was invented by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998. Google is a powerful search engine that you can look up anything you need. It started out as a powerful search engine, which it still is, but now it has so much more, like games, pictures, maps, e-mail, videos, and shopping. Google is important to many peoples’ lives.
World Wide Web With the world wide web you can go to any website in the world. The world wide web is a series of connected links which include computers and servers. That way you can go to any link with a click of your mouse!
Conclusion Technology has done some good things and bad things to our everyday lives. A couple of ways that technology has changed our society for the worse is that people are cyber bullying other people and hurting them. But a good thing that technology has done is that it has made teaching and learning easier. On a related note, the mimeo board that is helping make teaching easier is saving paper by showing the students the instructions without passing out paper and killing trees. The way we see technology in the future is good and bad. One bad thing that technology is probably going to do in the future is that people will leave their homes less and less. Already, people are able to order clothes and food from their computer and get it delivered to their door. We don’t think this is a healthy way to live. But a good thing that will happen is that we will not be cutting down any trees because everything will probably be on a screen.
