Vocab • Caliph-political and military leader who had to live by Muhammad’s example and follow the teaching of the Quran • Bazaar- marketplace • Mosque- Muslim place of worship • Minaret- tower used to call Muslim to prayer five times daily • Astrolabe- a device to help calculate a ship’s position on Earth
Most Muslims today are Sunnis • Traditional Muslim artists were not allowed to show living things in their art work • Since the Muslim empire was so large, It was hard to control far away countries which led to its breakup

Vocab • Sultan- Muslim ruler • Divan- group of advisers • Grand vizier- a chief adviser • Janissaries- special soldiers loyal only to the sultan • Grand Mufti- religious leader
The Ottomans built a new weapon called the cannon. • The failure in Vienna became known as the beginning of the end of the Ottoman Empire • The Ottoman empire became known as “the sick man of Europe” because the empire was weakening and lost land to Russia.

Upper Nubias main natural resource was GOLD • The Kush and Aksum were strong kingdoms that grew from trade. Kushite was similar to Egyptian culture where as Aksum was Christian • Most often trade brought change and new ideas • King Ezana was responsible for making Christianity the official religion of Aksum

Vocab • Supply and demand- supply of a resource is the amount available for sale or trade; demand is the number of people who want to purchase or trade for the product or service • Griot- local story teller
The Berbers were willing to risk death in the desert because they wanted gold. • Ghana’s kings controlled the value of gold by controlling its production which kept the prices high.
Great Zimbabwe • Unit 3 lesson 6
vocab • Granary- tower to store grain • Dhow- boat with triangular sails
The great Zimbabwe name came from the stone houses that were in the city • The Swahili language is still spoken today in East Africa • The Shona built granaries to store their grain. • The Shona also built drainage systems similar to our modern sewers.
