Why was he important for England • he captured the Spanish fort of San Augustine • captured 1600–1700 tons of gold from Spanish ships • He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588 • Captured Spanish city, Nombre de Dios • In 1573, he captured around 20 tons of silver and gold from a mule train.
Other interesting facts • King Philip II was claimed to have offered a $6.5M reward for who ever caught him • He first started going to sea at the age of 12 or 13 • made the first English slaving voyages • When he was 25 he married Mary Newman • He died at sea on his final voyage
