Stratus • Low level clouds • Fairly flat looking • ‘Layer cake’ appearance • Comprised of water droplets • Widespread across the sky • Can be associated with rain related with warm fronts
Alto • Middle level clouds • Mainly used to denote level; can be used to describe the height of other kinds of clouds • Comprised of water droplets
Cirrus • High level clouds • Comprised of ice crystals • Associated with fair weather systems • Shorter, wispy appearance
Cumulus • Classified by their formation through convection • Puffy, cotton ball appearance • Comprised of water droplets • Can appear at all levels in the atmosphere • Numerous other classifications based on stage of development
Nimbus • Clouds that cause/are associated with precipitation • Dark in appearance • Associated with cumulus and stratus clouds
