  3. Fungi Food • Some fungi feed on the remains of dead organisms. • Ex: Mushrooms • Other fungi are parasites that break down chemicals in living organisms. • Ex: Athletes foot fungus

  4. Mushrooms • Today we will take a closer look atthe parts of mushrooms!

  5. Spores Spores spread in a variety of ways. • Some shoot clouds of spores in the air at the same time. • Some use the help of insects. • Some spores blow in the wind.

  6. View mold more closely today at stations! Mold • Reproduce using hyphaefilaments Hyphae are branching, threadlike tubes that make up the bodies of the fungi. Reproduction happens here.

  7. Yeast Yeast, a microscopic, one-celled organism belonging to the group of organisms called fungi. There are many kinds of yeasts, some of them of great importance to humans. Yeast is necessary to make leavened bread, beer, cheese, and wine. It is rich in B vitamins. Like other fungi, yeasts obtain food from the organic matter around them; they secrete enzymes that break down the organic matter into nutrients they can absorb.

Irish Potato Famine of 19th Century Mold infested potato crops caused devastation and starvation in Ireland  Many Irish immigrants came to this country during this time in history to avoid starvation. At one of today’s stations, we will learn even more about the role fungi has played in history.
