Approximately 70% of the world’s 10, 000 known bird species are declining in numbers One out of every eight is threatened with extinction due to habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation 82% of albatrosses and 60% of cranes are threatened 75% of the bird species live in forests that are being cleared at a rapid rate (especially in the tropical areas in Asia and Latin America)

  3. HOWEVER…. Robins, blackbirds, and starlings have increased in number over the last 35 years Why? Largest declines are in birds who migrate long distances like tanagers, orioles, thrushes, vireos, and warblers 40% of all water birds are in decline because of the draining of wetlands Over 1 billion birds die per year from collisions with electrical power lines, cell towers, skyscrapers, and wind turbines

  4. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Birds are good environmental indicators- they live in all biomes, respond quickly to environmental changes in their habitats, and are easy to track and count Ecological “services” they provide? 1. 2. 3.
