Incisors have a single root. The incisors teeth are located between the cuspids, or canines, and are often referred to as anterior teeth or
front teeth because of their prevalence in smiling and talking. And the central incisors are the two teeth situated at either side of the midline. Incisors teeth have a narrow-edge, and are adapted for cutting. Their primary function is to cut food. Canines– There are four canines in the oral cavity are the next type of teeth to develop. The two in the maxillary arch and two in the mandibular area. They have the longest root of any tooth. Primary canines teeth generally appear between 16 and 20 months, with the upper canines coming in just ahead of the lower canines. Canines are the sharpest teeth and are used for ripping and tearing food apart. Their main function is to tear food. Premolars (Bicuspids)– The premolars teeth are situated behind and adjacent to the canines and its function is chewing and grinding food. Mostly adults have four premolars on each side of their mouths — two on the upper and two on the lower jaw. There are eight premolars in the oral cavity. The first maxillary premolar has two roots, and the remaining premolars have a single root. There are no premolars in the primary dentition. Molars– The most rear teeth in the mouth are the molars. They have broader and flatter surfaces with 4-5 cusps. They are designed to grind food. Molars generally have two roots, although the maxillary first molar (behind the second premolar) has three roots. Typically there are 12 molars in the permanent dentition with three in each quadrant of the mouth. Third molars are often known as wisdom teeth. The primary dentition only contains eight molars.
