  3. Religious Legacy The most important Mark 8:36-37 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Miss heaven and you miss everything Luke 16:27-28 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. • Introduction

  4. Biblical Exhortations Hebrews 2:10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 1 John 2:16-17 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. Mark 9:43-44 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. • Introduction • Spiritual legacy

  5. Social Service Much good needs to be done. Opportunities to reach out for Christ. Mother Teresa. Go beyond routine. Matthew 10:42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. • Introduction • Spiritual legacy • Biblical Exhortations

  6. Bible Exhortations 1 John 3:17-18 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. Matthew 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. • Introduction • Spiritual legacy • Biblical Exhortations • Social Service

  7. Albert Schweitzer 1875-1965 Schweitzer entered intensive theological studies in 1893 (age 18) at the University of Strasbourg where he obtained a doctorate in Philosophy in 1899. He began preaching at St. Nicholas Church in Strasbourg in 1899. He served in various high ranking administrative posts from 1901 to 1912. In 1906 he published The Quest of the Historical Jesus, a book on which much of his fame as a theological scholar rests. He continued with a distinguished musical career, recognized as a concert organist, internationally known. From his professional engagements he earned funds for his education, particularly his later medical schooling, and for his African hospital. • Introduction • Spiritual legacy • Biblical Exhortations • Social Service • Biblical Exhortations

  8. Having decided to go to Africa as a medical missionary rather than as a pastor, Schweitzer in 1905 began the study of medicine at the University of Strasbourg. In 1913, having obtained his M.D. degree, he founded his hospital at Lambaréné in French Equatorial Africa. With the funds earned from his own royalties and personal appearance fees and with those donated from all parts of the world, he expanded the hospital to 70 buildings. The honors he received were numerous, including the Goethe Prize of Frankfurt and honorary doctorates from many universities emphasizing one or another of his achievements. The Nobel Peace Prize for 1952 was given to him on December 10, 1953. With the US$33,000 prize money, he started the leprosarium at Lambaréné. Albert Schweitzer died on September 4, 1965 (age 90) and was buried at Lambaréné. • Introduction • Spiritual legacy • Biblical Exhortations • Social Service • Biblical Exhortations
