Bell Work • List the steps of from start to finish of the beef industry • What do you Consider to be a large Dairy Farm in regards to the number of cows milked
God Blessed Texas The Agriculture of the Texas Panhandle
Joplin Regional Stockyards Located in western Missouri One of the largest stockyards in the country Serves a 200 mile radius that covers 5 states Started a co-mingling program in 2001
What is Co-mingling Is the combination of several farmers calves Sorted so that calves are sorted into lots of the same weight shape color and sex At JRS producers have this as an option when selling claves or can sell them on commission It only cost 3.50 per head to co-mingle your cattle at JRS
This picture shows a calf being weighed, measured, and sexed to be placed with calves that are similar to it
Benefits of Co-Mingling Buyers are willing to pay more for several calves of the same size and weight than just one or two calves that very greatly in size. Smaller farmers are able to make more money in the long run due to there calves being placed in larger groups
Co-mingling activity • Sort foam beads based on • size • Color • And shape • Try to make groups as similar as possible
A group of aproximately 30 calves being sold together that are of the same basic size and weight
Cactus feeders Founded in in 1975 by Paul Engler and Thomas Dittmer Has grown from one 40,000 head capacity yard in Texas to the worlds largest privately owned feed lot with 10 yards in Texas and Kansas Cactus now has a max capacity of 520 thousand head between all ten yards
Feeders • Each feed lot has its own feed mill on sight • Corn is mixed with silage and then trucked to each lot of cattle based on there needs • Cactus has two types of feed • Starter ration • Finishing ration
Animal Handling • Cactus is also big in to research • Animal handling research • How animals react to types of chutes • How animals react to different ways of being herded and human contact • Feeding research • Different supplements • Different mixing ratios
Cattle arrival Cattle arrive at the feed yards at all hours of the day and night Cattle are then processed during the day by ear tagging, vaccinating and checking over all animal health and condition. Are then taken to there lot
Feeding For the next 180 days the cattle will be fed two times a day Cattle are also checked daily for any problems that may have arisen if animals are sick there then removed from the lot and moved to a hospital unit on the yard Cattle start at approximately 600 – 700 pounds and will reach a mature rate of approximately 1500 pounds
Cactus ships cattle almost daily for slaughter Calves go to several packing facilities including Tyson At Cactus when cattle are being shipped out they can have a semi hitting the dock every minute due to efficiency of there cattle facilities Finish and leaving the yards
Beef Processing Tyson's plant in Amarillo slaughters 3000 head a day Also produces all of the Wendy's Hamburger patties for the Midwest All of there hamburger is made on a fat to meat ratio
Animals are euthanized with a pneumatic gun Animals are then hung and proceed down the line where ears are removed and skinning begins hide is removed with a machine with 2 rollers and then transported to the on sight tannery Tyson procedures
Procedures All materials are used nothing is put to waste After skinning heads are then removed and placed on a separate line for processing Animals are then gutted and sent on down the line where they are divided in to two sides of beef.
Procedures Sides of beef then hang for 24 hours and are inspected threw out the process Sides then make there way into the butcher portion of the plant where the side is disassembled and put on other lines for processing and deboning Meat is then packaged and placed in refrigeration
After packaging Steaks and burgers are sent to whole sellers and distributed to restaurants and groceries
Dairys in Texas Dairy are much larger operations than we have here in the east we think 150 head is a lot here but in Texas 15 – 20 thousand is the norm. Cattle are either milked on rotary system or a herring bone system
Rotary sytem Cows are trained to step on and off of the platform Workers are stationed around the platform to clean utters and place and remove milkers on the cow Milk then flows to the center of the caracal and goes to larger tanks in the parlor
Herringbone system Workers stay in the pit One worker cleans utters while the others place milking units on the cows While another worker cleans the other side of the parlor cows are then sent back to there feed lots
Cotton is turned into thread then died and placed on larger rolls that are then woven into denim
Ethanol Production Corn and millet arrive daily by truck and rail and are stored on sight till needed at the Herford Texas plant of white energy. Corn is then ground and allowed to furment with yeast to create ethanol which is 200 proof
By products of ethanol production Wet distillers grain and distillers syrup Product is then sold back to feed yards and farmers to mix into feed rations
