Human Geography Chapter 5
Population • People are spread unevenly across Earth • 90% of world’s lives in Northern Hemisphere • 2/3rds of people live in middle latitudes • Most people live in lowland areas along fertile river valleys near edges of continents • Why is the world’s population so unevenly distributed? • People tend to live in areas favorable for settlement • Mild climates, fertile soils, & lots of fresh water
4 Great Clusters of Population 1. East Asia- China, Japan 2. South Asia- India & Pakistan 3. Europe- Germany, England 4. Eastern North America
3 Factors of Population Change 1. Birthrate- number of people born each year 2. Death rate- number of people who die each year 3. Migration- process of moving from one place to live in another World population clock: http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/
World Population Trends • World’s population has increased rapidly over the last 200 years Population increased caused by: 1. New farming practices 2. Sanitation improvements 3. Modern medicine • Currently, the world’s population is 7.2 billion people
Migration • Humans began migrating out of Africa 1-2 million years ago • Moved to Asia and Europe 2 factors that cause migration: 1. Push factors: causes people to leave a location • Ex: lost job, wars, & natural disasters 2. Pull factors: attract people to a new location • Ex: New job & better climate • Refugees: people who have been forced to leave & cannot return to their homes
Impact of Migration • Spread of disease • Smallpox, Black Plague, HIV/AIDS • Spread of culture and music • Many areas have many ethnic groups • Spread of language • Spread of food and animals • Wheat, potatoes, horses • Spread of religions
Culture • All features of a person’s life including language, religion, architecture, clothing, economics, family life, food, and government • Also includes a people’s beliefs, institutions, shared values, and technologies • Culture traits: activities and behaviors that people follow • Varies from place to place • Ex: Americans eat with knife and spoon -> Chinese eat with chopsticks -> Ethiopians eat with fingers • A country can have many different cultures caused by ethnic groups • Ethnic groups: human population that shares a common culture or ancestry
Cultural Diffusion • Diffusion: when an idea or innovation is adopted by other groups • Caused by: • Migration • War • Trade • Communication • Innovation- new ideas that spread • Ex: Printing press; basketball • Cultural diffusion can be slowed by physical barriers • Ex: mountains, deserts, oceans, etc.

Globalization • The process where connections around the world increase and cultures become more alike and blend together • Occurs when the ideas, habits, and institutions of one culture come in contact with those of another • Caused by trade and increased global communication • Internet, satellite TV, music, and movies
