  1. The Structure and Function of Blood Vessels By Meghan and Caitlin

  2. Arteries • An artery is a vessel that carries oxygenated blood away from the heart. (Usually) • Arteries are marked red on diagrams of the body. TIP The Artery carries blood Away from the heart. Remember Artery Away.

  3. Different types of Arteries • The Aorta is the main artery that carries oxygenated blood away from the heart to the rest of the body. • Different types of arteries then branch of the aorta. The first is called the coronary artery which transports oxygenated blood to the hearts muscular wall.

  4. Veins • A vein is vessel that carries deoxygenated blood towards the heart. (Usually) • Veins are marked blue on a diagram of the body. • The Vena Cava is the main vein which carries deoxygenated blood to the heart from the body.

  5. Pulmonary Veins and Arteries • These blood vessels are different as the veins carry oxygenated blood and the arteries carry deoxygenated blood. • Normally the arteries carry the oxygenated blood away from the heart and the veins carry deoxygenated blood to the heart.

  6. Capillaries • Capillaries are very small blood vessels that transport blood from arteries to veins. • Capillaries are the smallest type of blood vessels in the human body. • Capillaries are mostly found in tissues and organs that move.

  7. How are they different? • Arteries are the thickest type of blood vessel then there is veins and capillaries are only 1 cell thick. • The arteries circulate blood away from the heart while the veins carry blood to the heart. The capillaries connect the arteries and the veins and water, gases and chemicals filter through the capillary walls to the tissues.

  8. Pulse Beat • Your pulse is caused when your heart beats and blood is forced along the arteries at a very high pressure which is then felt as your pulse. • This can be felt on your wrist or your neck.
