Curriculum • 1 topic a term • All subjects are linked to the topic • Children will be encouraged to carry out more activities independently • The children can change their own reading books everyday once they have read them Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12

Read Write Inc Programme • Children have a phonics/reading/writing lesson everyday which takes 1 hour. • Children are taught individual sounds for each letter. • Each letter has a picture and ‘saying’ to help the children remember. • It is linked closely with reading and writing – children have a different book to read every week in class. • They work in partners to read the book • They then have writing activities linked with the book Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Helping your child to read… • Read as often as possible – even 10 minutes a night will have a good impact on your child’s reading • Help the child sound out the word and blend together e.g. • c-a-t • d-ay • n- igh- t • s-ee • s-t-ar • s-n-ow Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Helping your child to read… • Tricky words – cannot be sounded out tell your child the word and find the tricky part of the word e.g. said, he, she • With bigger words encourage your child to split the word into smaller part e.g. won-der-ful in-cred-ible Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
BIG WRITING An initiative introduced in November 2009 at both Harrowby and National School A method of teaching writing in many schools throughout the country Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
What is Big Writing? • Big Writing is taught on a Friday morning. • It is taught in 2 parts • 45 minutes before playtime is for ‘Big Talk’ this is where they discuss and plan the things they are going to write about. • The 2nd part takes place after playtime where the children write about the topic they have been discussing. Big Writing… • Big Writing focuses on: • Vocabulary • Connectives • Openers • Punctuation • If your child does big writing they will have ‘talk homework’ on a Monday saying what the topic is and ideas to talk about before Friday. Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Help with writing Your child should be able to: - write stories with a beginning, middle and end - write in different ways, e.g. lists, instructions, recipes - use interesting vocabulary to keep the reader interested - choose words and details that interest the reader - write in sentences using full stops and capital letters - begin to use speech, question and exclamation marks - begin to write more interesting sentences - spell familiar words correctly - write neatly and clearly Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Maths in Year 2 • Some of the areas we teach the children are: • To be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide • To solve problems involving money, time and measures. • To read, write and order 3 digit numbers • To double and halve numbers • To round numbers to the nearest 10 • To find halves and quarters of shapes and numbers • To name, sort and describe 2D and 3D shapes • To use ordinal number – 1st, 2nd, 3rd To tell the time in 5 minute intervals, know days of the week and months of the year Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Helping your child with maths • Practice counting • Recognising numbers when out and about • Using money and paying for things, finding the change • Tell the time • Weighing ingredients for cooking • Sharing out objects • Play games like snakes and ladders Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Year 2 SATS • Take place in May/June • They are spread out over the whole term to keep it as relaxed as possible • Children do SATs in reading, writing and maths • SATs confirm our teachers assessments • Parents will be informed of levels in the end of year report Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Year 2 SATS • An average year 2 child should achieve a level 2b. • A child working below year 2 expectations would achieve a level 1 or 2c • A child working above year 2 expectations would achieve a level 2a or level 3. Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Reading • All children do the level 2 booklet and those that achieve a high score in level 2 will go on to do level 3 • Level 2 reading consists of sharing a book with the adult and discussing OR • Answering comprehension questions in a booklet • All the questions for each part of the story are at the bottom of the same page • There are 2 types of question, a multi-choice and one written Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Reading - Level 3 • At level 3, the children have to answer the comprehension questions in a booklet • There are 2 books, one fiction and 1 factual • Each book has questions in a separate answer booklet Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Children's writing is assessed in different areas The longer task will be a story or an information text The short task will be a description or a set of instructions Spelling Handwriting Writing Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Spelling • There are 2 parts to the spelling assessment • Part one consists of writing a given word under a picture, the word must be spelt correctly to gain a mark • Part 2 consists of a dictation and the children are given the passage to fill in the missing words Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Mathematics • Maths is also assessed using booklets • There are 2 booklets – one at level 2 and one at level 3 • All children do the level 2 booklet and those that achieve a high score in level 2 will go on to do level 3 Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Liaison with National School prior to transfer in September 2013 • Visits by teachers to the National • Visits by National School staff to Harrowby • Children’s visits to the National - to see Y3 assembly in March - to spend morning with receiving class teacher in July • Parents’ Meeting at National, 2 July 2013 at 1.30pm Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Transfer to the National School – September 2013 • Your child is guaranteed a place at the National as long as you follow the correct procedures • Applications have to be made, preferably online : www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/schooladmissions or telephoning admissions at 01522 782030 Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
Transfer to the National School – September 2013 • 14 January 2013– Applications close at noon • 16 April 2013 - Offer of place posted by LA or view online • 13 May 2013 – Accept or refuse offer Harrowby Infant School 2.10.12
