Feasibility study of a cross boundary Managed Information Network to match the needs of Managed Clinical Networks for Cancer By conducting an information needs analysis across the West of Scotland MCN for Colorectal Cancer

Background • Acute Services Review, 1998 recommended setting up of MCN • Requirements of MCN to use the documented evidence base • Equivalent in England is the National Service Framework and the Cancer Service Collaborative Programme
Managed Clinical Networks • ‘…linked groups of health professionals and organisations from primary, secondary and tertiary care, working in a co-ordinated manner, unconstrained by existing professional and Health Board Boundaries, to ensure equitable provision of high quality clinically effective services through our Scotland.’
Specification for a Managed Information Network for Colorectal Cancer MCN Define the parameters for a trial of the proposed service Establish a model of collaborative working To define a model of a specialised information service to all Cancer MCN Project
Information needs analysis • Questionnaire to all the members of the West of Scotland Colorectal MCN • Semi-structured interviews with representatives of each staff group, sector and Trust in the network • Map existing provision for each group • Identify gaps and options for solutions
Services to investigate • Print resources and lending rights • Electronic access to • databases • journals • textbooks • Inter-library loans • Patient information
Services to investigate • Professional services • expert searches • current awareness services • training • literature searching • critical appraisal
Final outcome • A proposal for an information service to the West of Scotland Colorectal Cancer Managed Clinical Network which can hopefully be used as a model for all Managed Clinical Networks.
