Five Characteristics of American Romanticism They were more than a bunch of tree huggers!
Remember the 5 I’s! 1) Intuition – Romantics preferred feeling and emotion to reason and logic.
2) Imagination – Romantics thought that the imagination held the key to true artistic creation.
3) Innocence – Romantic writers were fascinated with innocence, such as the innocence of childhood or nature, and they wanted to retreat from the corruptions of civilization.
4) Inspiration from Nature – Because Romantic writers viewed the city as a place of moral depravity, they sought nature as a means for spiritual, moral, and artistic renewal. City = BAD! Nature = GOOD!
5) Inner Experience – Romantic writers highly valued the subjective experience of the individual; therefore, they were committed to displaying personal thoughts and feelings in their writing.
