  1. Solving Word Problems Read the problem. Decide WHO is involved in the problem. Decide WHAT is involved in the problem. Be very specific. Draw unit bars of equal length – begin a plan to solve the problem. Read each sentence – making sure you have covered all parts of the question. Put “?” in place – what are we solving for? Work computations. Answer question in a complete sentence. Does the answer make sense – check your work.

  2. Apply those steps to each and every word problem! • Let’s practice. • There are 9 white flowers. There are 3 times as many red flowers as white flowers. How many red flowers are there?

  3. 3/5 of a rectangular garden was filled with grass. If 10 square feet were not filled with grass, what was the area of the garden?

  4. Missy has $16. she has twice as much money as Susie has. How much money does Susie have?

  5. Mr. Vaccaro paid $56 for 4 pairs of pants. Each pair costs the same. How much did each pair of pants cost?

  6. Colin spent ¼ of his money on a story book. If the story book cost $6, how much money did Colin have at the beginning?

  7. The number of cars registered in Imperial is 4 times the number of trucks registered. If 4,356 cars are registered, how many trucks are registered in Imperial?

  8. Grace worked in a factory for 9 days. She was paid $45 each day. How much did she earn altogether?
