  2. The United States faced increasing pressure on Tuesday as the Palestinian quest for statehood gained support from Turkey and other countries. The U.S. administration would rather the Israelis and the Palestinians continue to negotiate in order to create a Palestinian state.

In Other News • Sony Corp. said Wednesday it will launch its next-generation portable game machine, the PlayStation Vita, in Japan on Dec. 17—earlier than in any other country—along with 26 software titles. The new device will debut outside Japan some time next year, the company said. the Vita is expected to become a major competitor to Nintendo Co.'s 3DS handheld machine. • The European Southern Observatory has just announced the discovery of more than 50 new exoplanets (planets outside our solar system), including 16 super-Earths (planets whose mass is between one and 10 times that of our own planet). One of these planets in particular could theoretically be home to life if conditions are right. It's called HD 85512 b, and scientists say it's about 3.6 times the mass of the Earth. This planet is about 35 light years from Earth. • Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has apparently released a new message to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, in which he praises the Arab Spring as a "devastating blow" to the United States. • North Carolina will put an amendment banning same-sex marriage on the ballot in May. • Reese Witherspoon – who has chosen not to press charges against the 84-year-old whose vehicle hit her – was struck last week during a jog in Santa Monica, Calif., when the driver failed to yield in a crosswalk.
