History of VX • Chemical agent • Effects the nervous system • Chemical Weapons Convention Treaty of 1985 • Proposed removal by 2007 • First proposal to destroy agent on site in Indiana • Proposal analyses preformed by the EPA, DEP, DOT, The Virginia Institute of Marine Science and The Virginia Polytechnic Institute

  3. Proposal to Remove VX • Destruction by U.S. Army • “Neutralized” and turned into “wastewater” for transport • Transport by DOT in hazardous waste vehicles • Further destruction at DuPont treatment site in NJ • Dumping of waste into Delaware River

Details of Destruction • Stored in Newport, Indiana • First phase of breakdown will occur on storage site • “Wastewater” or VX hydrolysate (VXH) is considered a corrosive • VXH contains EMPA, MPA and EA2192 • Proposal analyses preformed by EPA and Center for Disease Control not included in report

  5. More Details • PACT treatment will take place • The waste to be dumped in the Delaware will contain EMPA and MPA • 3,000- 7,000 gallons of waste daily

  6. Opinions and Positions • Residents: more research, no transportation and treat where stored • Army: compliance with 1985 treaty, security and waste concerns • NJ Representative: more research before action • Delaware Representative: more research before action
