The Special Developmental and Emotional Needs Of The Adolescent: Brain Research Okla. Career Technology Annual Summer Conference Sherry D. Ward, NCC, NCSC, LPC Lea Ann Garcia, LPC University of Central Oklahoma
Overview • 1) Overproduction of Dendrites • 2) Pruning • 3) Myelination • 4) Windows of Opportunity • 5) Windows of Sensitivity
Overproduction of Dendrites • Growth spurt of grey matter just prior to puberty • Overproduction of dendrites much like the overproduction of dendrites at birth • Dendrites are created by learning • Axons are the senders • Dendrites are the receivers • When Axons and Dendrites touch it is called a synaptic connection • The teenage brain is the brain they will take into adulthood.
Frontal Lobe • Abstract thought • Envision • Symbolism • Higher Order thinking • Decision making • Pseudostupidity
Frontal Cortex • Executive in charge of the brain • Planning Behavior • Problem Solving
Amygdala (A mig da la) vs. Frontal Cortex • Causes misunderstandings • Triggers anger, aggression, sexual interest, dominance and risk taking • Disorganization • Emotional Language
Pruning • Use it or lose it theory • Video games • Adults 1-2 % a year • Adolescents 15% a year
Myelination • Brain receives myelination developmentally • Frontal Cortex is coated last in adolescents • Adolescent hypocrisy
Instructional Strategies • Summarizing • Paraphrasing • Identifying Similarities and Differences • Questioning Techniques
Window of Opportunity Impulse Control Develop Relationships Communication Skills
Sleep • Role of melatonin • The need for sleep increases • Role of testing
Windows of Sensitivity • The period of time when the brain is negatively impacted more than normal for adverse exposure. • Addiction • Alcohol • Smoking • Drugs
Dopamine • Good time feeler • Neurotransmitter : from hypothalamus • Increases the effects of alcohol • Brain becomes fooled into producing less dopamine • Body becomes dependent upon alcohol to feel good
Adolescents • Addiction occurs more quickly, less chance of recovery. • Adolescents have reduced sensitivity to intoxication • Adolescents are less inhibited • Drugs & Alcohol have a greater effect on cognition
Strategies for Adolescents • 1) Hold them accountable • 2) Teach impulse Control • 3) Be Tolerant • 4) Teach Study Skills
