Budweis • 1265 - foundation of the town of Budweis • Rightsgrantedto the town by the king: • brewing right - right ofcitizens to brew, malt and sell beer in their houses • right of mile -no breweries,pubs and malt houses within 1 old mile (approx. 10 kms) awayfromthetown • Such a „monopoly“ causedthatbeers fromdiferrenttowns had special and uniquefeatures and were calledaccording to the place of theirorigin: • Budweis(Budějovice) ….Budweiser Bier(Budějovicképivo) • Pilsen (Plzeň) …………… Pilsner Bier/Plzeňsképivo

  7. Summary • Anheuser-Busch admitted that they wanted to imitate quality and character of beer brewed originally in the city of Budweis • „Budweiser“ cannot be a word devised by Anheuser-Busch, the company tries to claim at present in disputes with Budweiser Budvar N.C.
