  1. “Say Something” slide • I know, we are all singing the song in our heads, but let’s not do it out loud. • In a moment, you are going to see the “Say Something” slide that we used in our discussion on Wednesday. • This went ok on Wednesday, but we are going to see how we can make it BETTER today. • Take a moment to preview each of the four categories.

  2. “Say Something” • Ask a question: • *Why did . . . • *Who is . . . • *What would happen if . . . • *Do you think . . . • *I don’t get this part here . . . Make a prediction: *I predict that . .. *I think that . . . *Since this happened (fill in detail), I bet that the next thing will be . . . *I wonder if . .. Make a comment: *This is good because . . . *This is hard because . . . *This is confusing because . . . *I like the part where . . . *I don’t like this part because . . . Make a connection: *This reminds me of . . . *This part is like . . . *This is different because . . . *I also . .. *I never . . .

  3. Examples/Non-examples of “Say Something” Ask a question: • This. Why are people starting to look at Thomas like he knows something? • Not that. Who is the boy that really doesn’t like Thomas? Make a prediction: • NOT this. I think that Thomas will run in the Maze because it is the title of the book. • But THAT. I think that the boys are going to start fighting / falling apart in the Glade because the girl is different, she says things will change, and there are no more helpers coming.

  4. Examples/Non-examples of “Say Something” Make a comment: • This. I like the part where the boys are lipping off about the girl because it shows they are still just regular teenagers even with everything else that is going on. • Not that. I like the way she sits up so weird, talks, and holds her hand out because it is weird. Make a connection: • NOT this. This is like The Outsiders because all the main characters are boys. • But THAT. Gally’s hatred of Thomas is like Bob Sheldon not liking greasers. I think this because they don’t really know each other but they are making decisions about how they feel anyway.

  5. Protocol for Chapter 25 • Group 1: Ask a question (that makes us think) • Group 2: Make a prediction (based on the book). Don’t forget the “because” portion of your prediction! • Group 3: Make a comment (that makes us think) • Group 4: Make a connection (that you can explain).

  6. Protocol for Chapter 26 • Group 1: Make a connection (that you can explain). • Group 2: Ask a question (that makes us think) • Group 3: Make a prediction (based on the book). Don’t forget the “because” portion of your prediction! • Group 4: Make a comment (that makes us think)

  7. Tasks for the rest of the hour (listed in order of importance) • Finish the blue packet and place in the hand in basket. Notice: This is your first priority!!!! • Also, I will be taking what you have at the end of the hour for a grade. This will NOT leave the room! • Late/missing work • Read Chapter 27 for Monday.
