Pastor Teacher Evangelist Visionary Sermon Title: “The Verdict is Out” John 3:19 - 20
John 3:19 - 20 This is the verdict. Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds are evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light so that it may be seen plainly that what has been done through God.
Pastor Teacher Evangelist Visionary Sermon Title: “The Verdict is Out” John 3:19 - 20
Commentary We are not all here this Christmas morning by accident or incident, but by God's grace. Likewise "Jesus the light of the world was not an accident, but an intentional act of God to a dark and dying world. The writer says, "this is the verdict" in other word this is the outcome of the concerns and issue at hand. Jesus has come into the world, but men in their sinful state still desire evil things. Why is this so?
Well my friend all of us can not see without proper light. The light illumines how we see things or if we see them at all. Without proper lighting one can only see with limitations or not at all. The writer also so eloquently points out that that men loved darkness instead of light. This means that Jesus the light of the world was not accepted because the people liked their darkness, the sinful flesh and behavior.
Not only that but humanity didn’t accept this light which allows you to see truth and righteousness. Instead they did not like this light, because it exposed their darkness that they were not ready to give up. My friend, is there light in your life? Are you allowing the light of truth to prevail in your life today? Does Jesus' birth signify that you desire truth in the inward parts of your life?
Well the verdict was that people were sinful and without hope. No way to be redeemed, no way to get back to God. But, Jesus stepped into a dark and sinful world and overturned the previous verdict and declared a mistrial. Oh yes, he overturned the original verdict and declared that the light, the truth was in him and is the same light imputed to those who desire the truth and to bring light to others.
The Verdict is out that Jesus is the Christ, the living word, the Savior that came to redeem the humanity, the living water that can quench the spiritual thirst and the living bread that satisfies the hunger. Dr. Janice Gilbert, Senior Pastor McKinney United Methodist Church
