Based on the pattern of earthquake wave travel paths conclusions about the Earth’s interior has been concluded. • The Earth is composed of several layers. • The surface (crust) is the least dense of all layers. • The inner core is the most dense of all layers • The Earth early in its formation was essentially composed of a mix of molten materials. • Overtime the denser materials sank to the center, with the less dense layers forming layers, with the least dense layer at the surface
Layers • The surface layer of the earth is called the crust. • There are two types of crust: • Continental and • Oceanic
The next layer is the mantle. • Together the crust and the solid component of the upper mantle make up what is called the lithosphere • The lithosphere overlays the plastic (semi-molten) component of the upper mantle called the asthenosphere. • The remainder of the mantle is considered to be solid. • The layer below the mantle is the liquid outer core. The densest layer in the centre is solid is the inner core.
