COST 723 WG1 Meeting 1, Common Session WG1 + MC Bern, October 6-7, 2003 Stefan Buehler University of Bremen sbuehler@uni-bremen.de
Overall Activities • Delay due to COST move to ESF • Web site and mailing lists at http://www.cost723.org • COST 723 splinter meeting at EGS/Nice • Opening Workshop planned at ESTEC • Date (to be reconfirmed at this meeting): March 11-13, 2004 • Collection of COST 723 related EGS presentations on cost723.org COST 723 WG1 Meeting 1
Radiosonde Humidity Ozone Aircraft MOZAIC MARSCHALS Satellite AMSU Odin Envisat Champ WG1 Activities • Established contacts to data sources: • We will learn about ongoing activities in these areas in the next two days (hopefully). COST 723 WG1 Meeting 1

Match-up Procedure • Problems: • Sonde drifts during ascent • Time difference between sonde launch and overpass Pixel level comparison not possible Figure by V. Oommen-John COST 723 WG1 Meeting 1
Solution: Look at a target area, we take a 50km circle. Figure by M. Kuvatov Striking: Atmospheric inhomogeneity can be a problem. COST 723 WG1 Meeting 1
Standard deviation of brightness temperatures inside the target area. Vertical lines are from operational calibration. Number of Occurrences Figure by V. Oommen-John COST 723 WG1 Meeting 1
Error Model • The 50km inhomogeneity is the dominant error source. Error model:si = C0 + s50km • C0 is small, we take 0.5K. COST 723 WG1 Meeting 1
Comparison Lindenberg radiosonde humidity vs. AMSU-B on NOAA15, time period 2002. Discrepancies in the UT for very dry conditions. Figure by M. Kuvatov COST 723 WG1 Meeting 1

Conclusions • It is worthwhile to compare operational satellite humidity data and radiosondes. • Comparison in radiance space avoids inverse problem. • A good match-up methodology is crucial. • Tests consistency of: Satellite Data RT Model Radiosonde Data COST 723 WG1 Meeting 1
