Significant Changes Level 34 changes to a noncredit class: NESL 304. Levels 35 and 36 are no longer offered and are replaced by ESL 45 and 55. ESL 45 and 55 are 5 unit classes that meet 2 days a week (5 hours a week). ESL Department Program ChangeS Fall 2011
Motivations • Levels 34, 35, and 36 were previously designated lecture/lab, which allowed them to meet 10 hours a week while students received only 3 units of credit. This is no longer permitted under recent Chancellor’s Office regulations. • The course designated as a prerequisite for ESL 101 had to be degree applicable (thus changes to ESL 36 were necessary). • A floor level credit course without a prerequisite had to be established for our credit program. ESL Department Program ChangeS Fall 2011
Additional Details • A Non-credit Certificate of Completion for classes NESL 301-304 will be awarded to students who successfully complete NESL 304 (they cannot repeat the course after receiving the certificate). • ESL 45 will be a floor level credit ESL course without a prerequisite. • ESL 55 will serve as a prerequisite for ESL 101 and will be degree applicable. • ESL 45 and 55 will focus on reading, writing, and vocabulary. ESL Department Program ChangeS Fall 2011
ESL Department Program ChangeS Fall 2011 • Major Differences • ESL 35 and 36 are multi-skills classes which work on reading, writing, grammar, listening, speaking, and career awareness. • ESL 45 and 55 will focus on reading, writing, and vocabulary to better prepare students for the academic writing classes (101-103).
ESL 45 and 55 • ESL 45 - Reading and Writing Essentials I • A beginning course in reading and writing academic English for students whose first language is not English. Offers instruction in reading skills, basic grammar usage, paragraph organization and development, and appropriate basic vocabulary for academic reading and writing. • ESL 55 – Reading and Writing Essentials II • An intermediate course in reading and writing academic English for students whose language is not English. Introduces analytical skills and critical thinking through reading, word level, and sentence level grammar as it applies to academic writing, paragraph organization and development, and appropriate vocabulary for academic writing. ESL Department Program ChangeS Fall 2011
Issues • Students will now pay for 5 units for ESL 45 and 55. • Students will receive no units for NESL 304 (a noncredit class). • Instructors of ESL 45 and 55 will work with new texts, curriculum, course outlines of record, and learning outcomes. ESL Department Program ChangeS Fall 2011
