Focused Writing A brain-based approach to interpretation
How does the selection make you feel? Write about your feelings, whether you’re intrigued, bored, excited, angry, or however you may feel. Write in complete sentences, but don’t worry about being correct – just write as quickly as you can.
What does the selection remind you of? Is it similar to anything you’ve ever read, seen in a movie or TV show, experienced in your own life, dreamed about, etc. Explain the connections you make.
Pick a single moment in the selection and describe it. Go into as much detail as possible. Exactly what do you see? What do you hear? What are the smells? The sensations? Take a single instant that comes to mind from the story and describe it as fully as possible.
Pick one more moment from the story to describe. Go into as much detail as possible. Exactly what do you see? What do you hear? What are the smells? The sensations? Take a single instant that comes to mind from the story and describe it as fully as possible.
Compare your moments. Read over the last two sections you wrote. What do these descriptions have in common? You may see obvious similarities or you may have to reach for similarities. Either way – write!
Meaning What is a meaning of this selection? You don’t have to come up with the “right answer.” Rather think about what is one thing you can take away from this story that has meaning to you. Explain your answer.
