M M - M S P610 MANAGEMENT OF MULTIMEDIA SERVICES Javier Gallego Project Leader Telefónica I+D gallego@tid.es Tel: +34 1 337 4328 Fax: +34 1 337 4529
WHAT IS P610 • It’s a project about Management ! • It’s a project about Service Management !! • It’s a project about Multimedia Service Management !!! • It belongs to Telecommunication Services and Applications, but has relation with other areas • It’s a generic project, providing reference material
WHY P610 PROJECT? • Increasing number of PNO’s activities on Multimedia • Shift from demonstrators to commercial services • Inefficiencies detected in management (focus on technology, “ad-hoc” solutions, ...) • Uncompleted standards for Multimedia Service Management • Different activities going-on in different fora (TINA-C, DAVIC, NMF, ...)
Some quick figures • Project started in July-96 • It will finish in April-98 • Partners: DT, IT, OG, PT, RB, ST, TE, TI • Budget: 178.35 M*M • Four Deliverables • Several external presentations
P610 OBJECTIVES • Provide a framework, an architecture and methodological guidelines for management of multimedia services • Focus on services management (but considering also relationships with network management) • Final goal: “Allow PNO’s to build in a short period of time management solutions for new and existing MM services”
HOW TO REACH THE OBJECTIVES • Step 1: Look at what is available (D1), identify PNO’s needs for MMMS, and establish a common understanding • Step 2: Define an initial version of a Framework, Architecture and Methodology for MM services (D2) • Step 3: Apply them to two services examples (D3) • Step 4: Generate an improved version of Framework, Architecture and Methodology (D4)
STATE OF THE ART ANALYSIS (D1) • What is available from ITU-T, NMF, TINA-C, OMG, DAVIC, EURESCOM, RACE, ACTS (evaluation with pros, cons and open issues) • Results • Concepts based on TMN, ODP and EURESCOM • Monitor emerging activities (WBEM, ETSI EII) • Use an OO approach (P414 as starting point) • OMT as basis for methodology • Tool support useful when performing case studies • It’s available and has 3 volumes
Initial Version (D2) • D2 provides an initial version of the framework, the architecture and the methodology • It has been used • to work on the case studies • to promote intermediate results • as an important internal milestone • It’s available
Case Studies (D3) • Two case studies (tele-training and High Performance Islands) were selected and worked out applying the methodology • It was an interesting hands-on exercise supported by the use of the ROSE tool • The case studies have served to validate the initial version of the Framework, the Architecture and the Methodology, providing significant feedback to improve them • D3 has two annexes and is pending of approval
MMMS Framework (D2->D4) • Forms the context for MMMS by: • Concepts and terminology • Reference models • Requirements • Principles • It is indispensable to have a common understanding as the basis for the other parts of the project
MMMS Architecture (D2->D4) • The P610 architecture defines and describes, at the conceptual level: • components and sub-systems of a multimedia service management system • dependencies, interactions and communication between these components
MMMS Methodology (D2->D4) • The Methodology covers three stages: • Requirements capture • Object-oriented analysis • Architecture mapping • Emphasises the topic that multimedia service management have special requirements derived from a business model • The architecture mapping promotes reutilization and specialisation of existing packages • Based on OMT, using UML
What is new in P610? • P610 has extracted and adopted the most appropriate ideas for the Management of Multimedia Services • It has adapted some of the ideas for the specific needs and has provided the glue to harmonise them • It promotes the reutilization of existing knowledge focusing on the emerging multimedia-business niche
P610? How to use P610 results? • Framework as a reference material • Architecture as a skeleton • Methodology as a starting procedure Where to use P610 results • At PNOs, when thinking and designing management solutions for Multimedia Services • In other external fora (i.e., DAVIC) and in EURESCOM • Whenever Service Management is involved
Dissemination of P610 results • Presentation in Helsinki of preliminary results • (Final) results officially presented in this workshop • Special relation with DAVIC • Papers submitted to: • DSOM 97 • IS&N 98 • Results will be taken into consideration in P812: TMN evolution - Evaluating Service Provider Needs for the Next Millennium
CONCLUSIONS • WHAT THE PROJECT HAS ACHIEVED • Encompassment of different initiatives • Practical exercise with case studies and good feedback • Use of OMT and UML with good acceptance • Coherent and ready-to-use results • FUTURE WORKS • More emphasis on security and non-functional issues • Enhance the integration with the Network Mgmt Layer • Support for agents
