Element of the day • 77 – Iridium – Ir • Iridium is widely quoted as being the densest element, but this is because of an incorrect value for its atomic weight, which never got corrected on density charts. • It is expensive and so is usually only used in small amounts, like in high-end spark plugs, which will last much longer if tipped with iridium.
