2. Element of the day • 71 – Lutetium – 71 • For years, mixtures of the rare earth elements were thought to be a single element, because they are all so similar. They are so similar because instead of adding extra valence electrons as you go across the row, they are actually adding electrons to inner energy levels instead. • However, rare earths have different magnetic properties because those don’t depend on valence electrons. • Lutetium used to be one of the most expensive elements, but separation techniques have made it cheaper. Although no one except for element collectors and lighting manufacturers really want it.
