STORY {6th Primary} The Merchant of Venice Chapters 1, 2
Summary of chapter {1} Money for a friend Antonio was a very rich merchant in Venice. He had many friends but his best friend of all was Bassanio. Antonio was a good friend to Bassanio as he gave money to the young man when things were difficult for him. Bassanio wanted to marry Portia. She was a young Venetian woman from a good family. She was good and beautiful and she lived in an enormous house in the country. Lots of young men visited Portia to ask her to marry them.
Bassanio didn’t have enough money so he asked Antonio to lend him 3000 gold coins so he could marry Portia. But Antonio had got no money right then as all his ships were at sea. So they went to borrow money from Shylock. Shylock was a moneylender. He was very rich. He lent money to people and made them pay back more than they had borrowed. Shylock hated Antonio because Antonio sometimes lent money to friends for free and that was very bad for Shylock’s business. Shylock agreed to lend Antonio the money but he had an evil plan. Shylock thought that if Antonio couldn’t pay back the money, Antonio had to pay Shylock a pound of his flesh.

Summary of chapter {2} The guessing game After leaving Shylock’s office, Bassanio was worried that Shylock would play a trick on Antonio and make him pay back with a pound of his flesh and not gold coins. Bassanio bought himself lots of expensive clothes and lots of nice presents to give to Portia. He also had a big party for all his friends. Portia’s father wanted his daughter to marry a good man. So, before he died, he invented a plan to help her to find the best husband of all. He asked the cleverest craftsman to make three beautiful boxes. One of them had a picture of Portia in it. Portia’s father wanted her to marry who guessed correctly which box had her picture inside. The man who didn’t guess correctly, he would leave Portia’s house at once and that he would never again ask any woman to marry him.
One of the men who came to Belmont to ask Portia to marry him was an African Prince. He chose the gold box. It was written on it,``If you chose this box, you will find what all men want.’’He found a picture of a skull and a note inside the box. Then he said goodbye to Portia sadly and left Belmont at once. Then a Spanish Prince came to Belmont to ask Portia to marry him. He chose the silver box. He found a picture of a poor fool and a note inside the box. Then he left Belmont with a frozen smile on his face.
