  6. Tutorials One Physics tutorial per week (~7 students, 1 academic staff) One Maths tutorial per week (ditto) Tutorial questions (compulsory & session) handed out in Week x Compulsory questions answered by students and handed in during tutorial in Week x+1 to your tutor. The session questions form the basis of your tutorial session. Marked answers returned to students in Week x+2 NB Your first Tutor Sheet (Tutor Sheet 1) will be distributed during next Wednesday’s lecture (Week 1); tutorials begin in Week 2. TUTORIAL HOMEWORK MARKS ARE WORTH 12.5% (PHY101) AND 15% (PHY112) OF YOUR SEMESTER TOTAL NB Go to arrange tutorial times with your tutor DURING WEEK 1. IF YOU CANNOT FIND YOUR TUTOR IN PERSON, EMAIL THEM!!! SEE NOTICE BOARD OUTSIDE D17 (FIRST YEAR LAB) FOR ADDRESSES.

  7. Online Problems(Physics PHY101 & Maths PHY112) Problems class worksheets will be tackled online using either Mastering Physics or MyMathLab software. A representative from Pearson’s Publishers will discuss registering for these packages. The Department will give you the text books that cover the physics and maths PROBLEMS CLASS MARKS ARE WORTH 12.5% (101) and 15% (112) OF YOUR SEMESTER TOTAL The first (weekly) assessed Problems Sheets (one each for 101 and 112) will be set during Week 2 with a deadline of Sunday 7th October, 11:59 pm.

  8. Astronomy Meeting • Today 14.00 LT07 • Compulsory for all dual Physics and Astrophysics students • Also need to attend if you have opted for all three astronomy modules • Can attend if you have opted for one or two astronomy modules but not critical.

  9. Assessment and Examinations(Semester 1) PHY101 End of Semester Exam 75% Tutorial Sheets 12.5% Online Problems Sheets 12.5% PHY112 End of Semester Exam 70% Tutorial Sheets 15% Online Problems Sheets 15% PHY113/4/5/6/8 Laboratory classes must be passed – failure to pass the lab class means that you fail the year! Astronomy courses: Dr Cartwright et al will give information at the start of each 10 credit course itself.

  10. Coursework Attendance at all course components is compulsory. Most of the people who fail WOULD HAVE PASSED HAD THEY ATTENDED MORE AND HANDED IN MORE ASSESSED WORK!!

  11. Coursework – Overall Performance Correlation What does this mean? i Only 3 students passed the semester overall when they had failed the assessed work. ii Only 5 students failed the semester overall when they had passed the assessed work. iii It is extremely unlikely you will fail overall if you achieve >50% for the assessed work. iv Complete and submit your coursework!!!

  12. Attendance at Teaching Sessions • You are expected to attend all teaching sessions. • If there are issues preventing you from attending you need to let us know • For any serious / long term issues complete a Special Circumstances form • We will monitor attendance at most lectures, labs etc (Barcode)

  13. Conceded Passes • YOU NEED TO PASS EVERYTHING TO GAIN 120 CREDITS!! • “CONCEDED PASSES” FOR 100 OR 110 CREDITS ARE AWARDED AT OUR DISCRETION BUT NEW RULES DICTATE THAT WE CANNOT AWARD CPs FOR MARKS LOWER THAN 30%! NORMAL PASS MARK IS 40%. • ONLY APPLIES TO NON-CORE MODULES

  14. Important Times for Next Week – Week 1 Monday 24th SeptFirst Maths Lecture* (PHY112) Diagnostic test 10:00 Lecture Room 7 (Hicks) Prof Mowbray First Physics Lecture 11:00 Lecture Room 7 (Hicks) Dr Mears Lab Preparatory Session 13:00 Lecture Room C (Hicks) First Astro Lecture (IF you have elected PHY111) 17:00 Lecture Room 1 (Hicks) Dr Cartwright Find your tutors during Week 1 I will distribute lists early next week (Monday).
