  1. Computer Nightmares

  2. What are viruses and worms?

  3. Virus – Small software programs that are designed to spread from one computer to another and to interfere with computer operations.

  4. Worm – Like a virus on steroids. Worm is able to run and copy itself on a huge scale with absolutely no human assitance.

  5. How do computers becoming infected?

  6. A virus can be attached to a spam email, application programs on your computer, application programs installed from jump drives or a homemade CD, camouflaged as a benign file download, or concealed in HTML of Javascript code on a website. All that needs to happen for a virus to spread is for someone to click the file and open it. Worms don’t even require that much action.

  7. How do computers becoming infected?

  8. Remember: Software that connects to the Internet is vulnerable to attack.

  9. How does a computer virus spread?

  10. A virus must be activated. The file that contains the virus must be opened, or executed in order for the virus to come to life. Once activated, viruses look for certain programs to infect, depending on what they’ve been programmed to do. The one thing all viruses seem to do well is duplicate themselves within the programs they find, and that is how they spread.

  11. Signs That a Computer Has a Virus

  12. Time Frame – Typically, it will take 6 months for an unchecked worms/virus to completely shut down a computer. You will probably start noticing effects of the virus within 3 to 6 weeks.

  13. Processing Power – The first thing affected is your processor. You will notice that programs will be slow to open and run. Viruses affect video and video-game performance.

  14. Speed– Loss in speed may indicate a virus. Web pages will load slower, but over time, programs such as word processing, excel, powerpoint will be slower to respond to input.

  15. Program Malfunction – Once a virus progresses so far, programs will stop opening, or will open but freeze up, or stop responding after a few minutes of use.

  16. When this happens, your computer has likely progressed to a point where it is beyond repair, and you will have to reformat your hard disk to get rid of it.

  17. Prevention

  18. Install and run an anti-virus program at regular intervals. • Malware Bytes and Microsoft Security Essentials are good programs.

  19. Use a firewall program • Firewall program - a technological barrier designed to prevent unauthorized or unwanted communications between sections of a computer network

  20. Avoid illegal file sharing – When downloading any type of software (programs, utilities, games, updates, demos, etc), make sure you’re downloading software from a reliable source.

  21. Can a Cell phone get a virus?

  22. Yes - A mobile virus is an electronic virus that targets mobile phones or wireless-enabled PDAs
