Muon Electron Conversion Club • The Muon Electron Conversion Club is an informal structure consisting of volunteers using small fraction of working time • The club goal is to make a new conceptual design for 2009 • Why do we need a new design? 1) MELC (MECO) idea was proposed at 1987 – 19 years ago 2) MECO cost increased by a factor of 2 due to magnet cost increase. Magnet – 55 M$, detector – 25 M$, Total coast – 80 M$ If we can reduce the magnet cost by half it would great for an experiment (50 M$) 3) New idea has appeared – Phase Rotation Linac & Ring (FFAG) to improve muon beam performance Rashid Djilkibaev, NYU Need for New Ideas & Options
Conceptual Design Issues • Magnet System • Phase Rotation Ring or Linac • Proton Beam Time Structure • Detector System Rashid Djilkibaev, NYU Need for New Ideas & Options
Proton & Muon Beams • MELC for Meson Factories 0.6 GeV – 200 µA (1.2 x 1015 p ) proton beam power - 120 kW muon stopping rate – 1011 muon/sec • MECO for BNL AGS 8 GeV – 4 x 1013 p proton beam power - 50 kW muon stopping rate – 1011 muon/sec • PRISM for JHP 50 GeV – 4 x 1014 p proton beam power – 3.3 MW muon stopping rate – 2 x 1011 muon/sec • Future upgrade of FNAL Linac 8 GeV – 1.5 x 1015 p proton beam power - 2 MW muon stopping rate – 4 x 1012 muon/sec Rashid Djilkibaev, NYU Need for New Ideas & Options
