Sounds great...but where do I start? No computer yet! • Align TL location with Social Studies • Build it up over a few days. • Get your students up. • Pop up the static visuals. • Bring it on!
Align TL location with Social Studies What are they teaching in Social Studies? Enhance by pre-teaching, co-teaching or post-teaching that location. Select three or four specific sites you want them to “see”.
Build it up over a few days Do the geography. Just where is the “location” located? Use the pull down map. Where are we? Consider a “Field trip permission form” Consider a “Passport” Time difference (developmentally ready?)
Get your students up! Do some physical verbs in TL. Can we walk, run, swim, hop, fly to location?
Pop up the static visuals Show the sites and describe them in the TL Compare/contrast location sites to local sites. Play with the visuals.
I’m not a “techie”!! • How many ways can you call for HELP? • Easy: Mess around with it yourself • Easy: Use the Google® tutorials available as PDF and videos!
I’m not a “techie”!! • Medium: Call in your school tech person • Medium: Ask a tech-savvy colleague
I’m not a “techie”!! • Hard: Ask your local high school for a student assistant. • Hard: Ask your own kid.
I’m not a “techie”!! Hardest: Giving up entirely and losing this opportunity for you and your students.
Where do I start? Now you need a computer. You start and create with Google® Maps. You end and tour with Google® Earth. Practice before you go. A “Step by” for Google® Maps to Google® Earth is provided.
How do I present it? You do have options:
Things to keep in mind Pre-planning is everything. Check the room for internet capability. Have the program up and minimized.
What do the students have to say? “In Spanish we went to Spain on the google earth technology. We saw some of the famous bildings in Spain like the Plaza de torros (Bull fighting arena) and the capital of Spain is Madrid. To get to Spain we went to the Kennedy airport and flew over the Atlantic Ocean to Madrid! I wonder what we will do next week?” - Zoe
“In Spanish we took it to the next level. On the computer we used google earth to get to Spain. We went to Spain to look at the famous structures. We got there by going from Hopewell to the Kennedy airport. Then we flew to Spain! We saw the museum of art, the bull fighting arena and a big park in Spain. All of the places we went to are in the capital Madrid. When we were doing it it felt like we were flying and falling. I hope we can go for real.” - Nick
