  1. Astronomy How would you define this term?

  2. Astronomy The study of everything beyond Earth!

  3. What do we call the overall place where we live?

  4. The Universe

  5. Universe Definition: All of space and what is found in it.

  6. Order of the Universe • Parts from largest to smallest?

  7. Order of the Universe?(Place the following from largest to smallest?) • Planet • Sun’s Neighbors • Local Group/Cluster • Star • Natural Satellite • Solar System • Galaxy • Universe • Super Cluster

  8. UNIVERSE

  9. Universe • All of space and what is found in it. • Full of 100 billion galaxies with 100 billion stars each.

  10. Super Cluster

  11. Super Cluster • A collection of galaxies which includes the Local Group (A Cluster). • Largest gravitational bound system so far. • Ours=Virgo Super Cluster

  12. Cluster

  13. Cluster • Ours : - Local Group – The Milky Way Galaxy and its ~50 closest neighbors. • A small group of galaxies which are held together by gravity and orbit each other. • “Local” means the galaxies are within a region 3 million light years across.

  14. Galaxy

  15. Galaxy • A vast collection of stars, gas, and dust held together by gravity. • Ours = Milky Way

  16. Sun’s Neighbors

  17. Sun’s Neighbors • The sun and its 20 closest neighboring stars. • Our closest stars are: Alpha Centauri, Proxima Centauri ( 4 LY Away )

  18. Solar System

  19. Solar System * A group of planets and other celestial bodies that orbit a star. Ours: The sun and its collection of 8 planets.

  20. Star • A hot, glowing globe of gas that emits energy. • It radiates a huge amount of energy in the forms of light and heat. • Ours = The Sun

  21. Planet

  22. Planet • An object that revolves (orbits) around a star. • Ours = The Earth

  23. Natural Satellite

  24. Natural Satellite • An object that revolves around a planet • Ours = The Moon

  25. What is the order?(Largest to Smallest) • U___________ • S___________ C__________ • C ___________ • G___________ • S___________ N___________ • S___________ S___________ • S___________ • P___________ • N___________ S___________

  26. Order of the Universe(Proper order from largest to smallest.) • Universe • Super Cluster • Local Group/Cluster • Galaxy • Sun’s Neighbors • Solar System • Star • Planet • Natural Satellite

  27. You now know the parts and order of the universe!

  28. What an astronomical task you have accomplished!!!
