1. Calculating the HDI Amie Gaye
UNDP/HDRO
2. Human development index calculation The HDI measures average achievements in three basic HD dimensions:
A long and healthy life
Knowledge
A decent standard of living
4. Combining the indicators Goalposts’ are chosen for each indicator
Using goalposts rather than observed minima and maxima allows comparisons over time
Set to allow for disaggregation e.g. school enrolment
subgroups can have lower values than national average
5. Goalposts for the HDI
6. General Formula Dimension index = actual value – minimum value
Maximum value – minimum value
Calculating the HDI for Egypt
7. The weights in the HDI Dimensions– health, education, standard of living – weighted equally
Equal weighting is not an accident; reflects a belief that all dimensions are equally important
How sensitive is the HDI to changing weights?
8. Task for Groups 1-2 Step1: Identify one key dimension of human development that is not captured in the HDI (areas to consider may be environmental sustainability, quality of education, quality of life, inequalities, etc.)
Step 2: Select a maximum of two indicators (but preferably only one) to measure the new dimension
Step 3: Give justifications for your choice of indicators
Step 4: Decide on the relative importance, or "weight" for each indicator-including both the new ones and the traditional HDI indicators, and redistribute weights accordingly, in percentages that together, amount to 100.
Give reasons for your choice of weighting.
9. Tasks for Groups 3-4 Conceptualize human development within the context of the country assigned to you (it could be from the perceptive of human security, social inclusion, global integration, empowerment, etc);
Briefly explain the concept ;
Select indicators to construct a new composite index as a summary measure of the concept;
Set goalposts in the context of your assigned country (this is important for monitoring progress);
Assign weights to each indicator; and
Give justification for your choice of indicators and assigned weights
