  3. Alaska • Russian Territory • Purchased in 1867, pushed by US Secretary of State William Seward. • Seward wanted to box in the British in Canada, Russians wanted to get rid of debt. • People questioned “why Alaska? It’s so Cold!” Legislation Passed by one vote, called Seward’s folly.

  5. Hawaii Christian Missionaries come early 1800’s. Start Converting people from polytheism. Rich White People (not just Missionaries) come in from US. They Start Sugar Plantations, Start Rolling in Dough. Man by the name of Sanford P Dole, a son of Missionaries, gathered up some militia in 1887 and forced the king to sign the “bayonet Constitution.”

Hawaii Cont.. • New Constitution had economic and literacy tests to vote, weakened the power of the king. • Swung Power to Whites. • Owners on Sugar Plantations didn’t like US Tariff on Sugar wanted to become US state so no Tariff. • Old King Dies, Sister becomes Queen, wants to get rid of Bayonet Constitution.

  7. Hawaii Cont Cont • Whites Back a Coup attempt. Including ambassador to US John Stevens. Coup starts to look iffy, Stevens calls in the Marines to protect Americans lives. Queen surrenders. Republic of Hawaii declared, 1893, annexed 1898. After Pro expansion President comes into office.
