  2. Winter Storms • When the air is colder than 0°C all the way to the ground, precipitation falls as snow.

  3. Lake Effect Snow • Land near large lakes, like the Great Lakes, cools much faster than the water in the lakes. • As cold dry air moves across the warmer water, it becomes more humid as water vapor evaporates from the lake surface. When the air reaches land and cools, lake effect snow falls.

  4. Snowstorm Safety • Winter storms can cause widespread damage. • High winds make the situation especially dangerous. • Limit vision of people driving and/or walking • Cools a person’s body temperature rapidly • To be safe: • Find shelter from the wind • Cover as much of you skin as possible. Stay dry. • If you’re in a car, only keep the engine running if the exhaust pipe is clear of snow.
