Peace in our time – Year 6 The children of Olney Middle School are proud to present their very own Art Exhibition. “Inspiring learning through Art” The children have been working hard on their own individual year group projects, and have really excelled producing some excellent pieces of work. The offer to hold an exhibition of their work at the Three Hares Gallery was an amazing opportunity, which as a school we have grasped with both hands. Here is a brief outline of what topics each year group has been looking at. Olney Middle School Although this is a very busy time for Year 6, we are still able to show off their artistic talent through class-based work and homework. They have been exploring the causes and effects of WW1 and WW2. They have got to understand and learn the answers to questions such as: What was the Christmas Day Truce? Why did World War 2 happen? Who was Winston Churchill? How did Britain survive this period in history? They have visited The Holocaust Education Centre in Newark, which is specially designed for KS2 children and providing an invaluable experience. Children have made Anderson Shelters, Bunkers and war medals to name a few. They have also created some very moving Blitz pictures which if you close your eyes you can hear the bombs exploding and sense the fear showing what life was actually like during these times. The talent is unbelievable and the standard of work is very high. The work shown certainly deserves its place here in the gallery, if only there was space to put it all up! Also, in the exhibition are a selection of the poppies the children made for the centenary year of the World War. We created our very own display at Olney Middle School and the whole school contributed in some way from poetry, writing to Art work. There are some images in the gallery which show the display at the school. H2Woah! - Year 3 Year 3 have been following the journey of water as it makes its way through the whole water system — from rivers and seas,to clouds, rain and mountains. We have also learnt about the amazing creatures and plants that can be found in our rivers and oceans. • Choosing the project for Year 3 was hard because there were a few famous Artists we could have looked at using the topic water. Finally deciding on George Seurat and Claude Monet who use a very similar style in their work, but different enough to be able to see the difference between the two styles. The children soon got the hang of pointillism and looked at the artist Seurat who used dots to create his masterpieces. The children used cotton buds to create the effect of the artists, and were only allowed to use primary colours to make secondary and tertiary colours with. Standing back looking at the picture from afar makes the dots blend and create a wonderful landscape. We then looked at Monet who uses a slightly different technique instead of cotton buds we were able to use brushes but only using dabs of paint rather than full brush strokes. Although a slow process results were brilliant and the children were extremely proud of their work. • We ended the topic with a 3D model of Monet’s famous water lilies. The children had to cut and stick their lilies together independently. They then had the choice to paint them in the style of Monet or Seurat. As you can see from the results in the gallery the children’s talents shone through and they are extremely proud to show off their work.
Dragon Dynasty – Year 5 Incredible Industry – Year 4 The children have been transported to the time of the Victorians this term and have been learning about the Industrial revolution, incredible inventions, the ‘Great Exhibition’ and so much more! They have also explored what life was like for children at that time including smelling gruel! They have read several stories including ‘The Runaways’ and ‘Street Child’. The topic will be brought to life when they visit Ironbridge. Over the last term, we have been learning about China. Finding out about the geographical features of the country, researching the culture, language, history and even making our very own Chinese dragons and learning a dance or two! InArt we have made our own 3D Chinese lanterns using the Chinese alphabet and symbols to represent ourselves. Exploring Pop Art through the works of Andy Warhol who focussed on illustrations and prints of mass produced commercial goods and famous people. Roy Lichtenstein has really made the children blossom they have really understood the concept of his work using Ben Day Dots and combining their 3D work with Pop Art to create their own packaging. You will see from the work exhibited they really grasped the concept of Pop Art. Our Artist of choice for Year 4 this term was L. S. Lowry who was famous for his “Matchstick Men and Matchstick Cats and Dogs”. The children looked at the world around us, including drawing and painting birds. They even had a go at ink and card edge technique of famous landmarks and buildings from around the world. Moving on to learning how to draw portraits with all the bits in the right places!, which led us on to a class project of a portrait of Oliver Twist and Queen Victoria where each child had a square of the image and decorated in a medium of their choice. We then put the picture back together and you can see the incredible results up in the gallery. The final part of this term the children have all drawn and painted their own Mythical Creatures using watercolours or a medium of their choice. From the work they have produced you can see they have really produced some stunning pieces of work. As a finale to this Lowry project the children were given the opportunity to make their own matchstick style people, in a pose of their choice. They made the models out of wire and then wrapped in foil followed by mod-rock, then painted. The children came up with a range of poses some which are just clever! We have tried to exhibit as many of the pieces of work as we can, the level of work is phenomenal.
