Importance of Vision and Goal Setting as a Leader Group or teamwork is successfully managed based on the rate of effort and dedication that the group members’ show in achieving the objectives of the project. In the contemporary world, there is a lot of specialization, division and diversity in terms of learning and education. Individuals are focusing on mastering a given line of duty with the aim of improving the efficiency, quality and effectiveness of their performance. Therefore, finishing a given task will require pulling different people with various qualities and qualifications into the team. Such people will require a source of command. The leader will have to understand the consummate direction where the team or organization has to headed, and hence, to guide his followers along a path destined to meeting the objectives. This understanding cannot exist in the environment inept of vision and goals. Vision is what maintains the group guided towards realizing the group objectives. Goals help the leader to ensure that the group remains along the course of its mission. Without smart goals, the group may not be wrong or right, since there are no standards of gauging their contribution and performance. The imperativeness of having well-established, agreed and challenging goals is that they will always play the role of motivating the group. The team will always comprehend the aim of achieving the goals. However, there are certain characteristics attached to the development of goals and vision that need to be considered by effective leaders. The goals must be feasible, geared towards growth and development of the organization, must be yield in a consensus approach, and strategically planned. Failure to meet these qualifications will limit the extent of commitment among group/team members. When developing the goal, the leader has to involve the members of the team. Engaging members gives the feeling of ownership and worthiness in the group or organization. The members consider the goals as their own set targets, other than in cases where the goals are set for the group. Lack of involving the members will implicate imposing targets, which may be demotivating. The goals have to be at a level not too difficult to kill the spirit of the members, yet not too easy to relax the

  2. team. In addition, goals should be well-spelled out in a clear and directional manner. Moreover, the vitality of providing feedback based on goal performance cannot be overemphasized. Feedback triggers the morale of members and reinforces their commitment towards achieving the goals. There are six steps of goal setting that are aimed at realizing the mission of the organization. The first step involves visualizing of the organization or group characteristics. This creation of mental image desired image of the organization yields the vision of the organization. With a developed vision, the leader can be able to direct and motivate the employees towards the realization of the prosperous position. The vision will also help the leaders to concentrate on the most beneficial inputs towards improving the performance of the organization, rather than diverting energy on inputs with minimal influence. This is in line with the Pareto principle of cause and effect. The second step includes stipulating goals in non- measurable terms, yet feasible and precise. Thirdly, the leader with the members need to work out the approach of realizing the image through establishing of attainable and timed objectives. These will ease the process of supervising and monitoring. Members have to understand the required strategies that will help them achieve their objectives. This involves delineating appropriate tasks for achieving the objectives. These should be time-framed; hence, the five steps require setting out the timelines for each task. All the five steps are facilitated by the sixth step of follow-up, which aims at detecting areas of reinforcements, corrections, deletions and modifications in order to perform incredibly. In conclusion, vision and goal help the leader in giving effective guidance aimed at meeting the expectations of the organization in a smooth flow, and at the expected timeline. Effective leadership employs organization goals and vision as baseline forces of motivation and reminders of the expectations path that employees need to embark on while dispensing their responsibilities.
