India is in a state of transition • Demographic transition is the transition from a stable population with high mortality and fertility to a stable population with low mortality and fertility • During the transition population growth and changes in the age structure of the population are inevitable

  3. Total Fertility Rate

  4. Population growth in India • India’s population needs to stabilize • The current growth is not due to high ‘Total Fertility Rate’ but due to ‘Population momentum’

  5. The current population of country is young • More than 50% of the population is in the reproductive age group • It has reproductive needs • about 18 million people per year are added due to reproductive age of the population • 161 million more people will be added by 2016 • about 42 percent of population increase is contributed by births beyond two children per family.

  6. Population Stabilization is one of the biggest priorities of the country to ensure sustainable development.

  7. How do we address this challenge?

  8. Checking Population momentum • Delay marriage • Delay child bearing, and • Space births

  9. Early Marriage • In some states almost 50% of girls marry below the age of 18. • Average age at marriage for girls in India remains 17 years • Recurring pregnancies follow. • Result "too early, too frequent, too many". Source: RCH & DLHS 2002-2004 Released Aug. 2006

  10. High need • 188 million couples require contraceptive coverage • Out of them only 53% are currently using contraceptives • Vast Numbers of people cannot avail of the services even when they are available due to problems of knowledge and access. Source: RCH & DLHS 2002-2004 Released Aug. 2006
