  3. Mileage and Warranties • Car # 1 still possessed the remainder of the factory warranty. 5000 km. • Car #2 still possessed the remainder of the factory warranty. 22,000 km. • Car #3 had only the corrosion and emission warranty left. 61,000 km. • Car # 4 had only the corrosion and emission warranty left. 65,000 km.

  4. Lemon aid, Pros and Cons • According to Lemon Aid this is what was said about the Mazda: 626, 929, Miata, Protégé (reasonably-priced and almost as reliable as the Honda, Toyota competition) • According to Consumer guide the Consof the car are slightly under powered, and heater controls are too far from the driver’s reach. The Pros are good fit and finish, holds its value, good fuel economy, and spacious.

  5. Inspection • Dents, panel alignment, bubbles in the paint, variations in paint colour from panel to panel, doors open and close properly. Body

  6. Mechanical • Inspect brake pads and rotors on the front for wear and thickness of rotors. • Inspect rear drum brakes for fluid leaks, shoe lining wear, drum run out and wear limit. • Inspect tires for wear, suspension fluid leaks, front steering linkage play. • Inspect exhaust system for leaks and rust holes. • Inspect under hood for leaks and recent replace ment parts

  7. Electrical • Inspect fuse box for loose wiring. • Inspect that all fuses and relays in the fuse box are present. • Inspect all interior and exterior lights, wipers, horn, dash lights, horn, etc for proper operation. • Inspect all wiring looms in the trunk and under the hood for originality. • Run the engine to make sure that it runs fine and all warning lights and gauges work.

  8. Emissions • Inspect under hood engine area to make sure all component are present. • Make sure the MIL light on the dash works. • Inspect under the car to make sure the catalytic converter is present and does not look tampered with. • Inspect to make sure the oxygen sensor (s) are present.

  9. Interior • Inspect all the seat belts for proper operation and that they have no frays or tears in them. • Inspect the seats and carpet for stains or signs of water damage. • Inspect the ashtray for use (non smoker). • Inspect the trunk for the spare tire and tool kit. • Inspect the trunk for water leaks or damage. • Inspect the headliner for damage.

  10. Engine • Inspect the fluids for condition and level. • Inspect the drive belts. • Remove the spark plugs and perform a compression check. • Inspect the tune up components. • Run the engine and road test the car for signs of blue, black or white smoke from the exhaust (possible sign of an expensive repair).

  11. Paying for your car • My wife and I have taken into consideration that we would need a new car in the next year or so (Our present car is 14 years old). We put away some money to purchase a new or slightly used car. Therefore, we will be paying cash for our next car. I do not want to pay a bank or finance company the service charge plus the 6% plus interest rate.

  17. MTO • The car that I would purchase is car #2 as it still has warranty and is very low km,s. Therefore, I would have to pay 8% on the purchase price of $15,500.
