Today’s Objective • Impact of alcohol and other drugs on vehicle crashes, injuries, violence and sex
Video • Take note of the consequences that Jeremy receives for his DUI. • Begin thinking of what you believe the consequences should be for someone who is charged with a DUI. • Write these down, as we will engage in a debate after the video. 15 minutes
How Alcohol Affects Driving • Ability to judge distance, speed and turns • Increases tendency to take risks • Slows reflexes and reduces concentration
Drinking and Driving Statistics • Men were responsible for 4 in 5 episodes of drinking and driving in 2010(81%) • 85% of drinking and driving episodes reported by people were also reported as binge drinking. (5 or more drinks in one sitting for men, 4 or more for women) • ½ of all fatal car crashes involve alcohol use • Accidents related to drinking and driving occur once every 45 minutes in the United States • Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens and one out of three of those is alcohol related • Every minute one person is injured from an alcohol related car crash.
Alcohol and Teens • 1/3 of 8th graders drink alcohol • 1/5 teens binge drink. Only 1/100 parents believe his or her teen binge drinks • Teen alcohol use kills about 6,000 people each year, more than all illegal drugs combined • High school students who use alcohol or other substance are 5 times more likely to drop out of school or believe good grades are not important
Binge Drinking • Definition: 5 or more drinks for a man or 4 or more drinks for a woman in one sitting • Prevalence is higher among me than among women • 90% of alcohol consumed by youth under 21 is in the form of binge drinking • 75% of alcohol consumed by adults is in the form of binge drinking
Homework • Look up drinking and driving consequences in North Carolina. • Look up both under 21 and legal age consequences.
