What are polymers like? • Polymers are made of long carbon chains. • They are a little bit like micro-elastic bands themselves. • In a polymer they are bundled together. • Sometimes chemicals/heat are used to cross-link these bundles to make the polymer tougher or more rigid.
Elastic band investigation • PUT ON GOGGLES/SPEX to protect your eyes! • CLAMP your stand to the bench so it does not TOPPLE • Hang an elastic band from a the clamp. • Measure the length of the band and record it in a table. • Add a weight (100g ≡ 1N, Newton) • Measure the new length and record it. • Repeat until the band will not stretch any more!
Results table & analysis • Use a table like this to record your results • Now plot a points/scatter graph of this data
Analysis 2: Conclusion Q’s • Did you get a straight line or a curve? • What does this tell you about the polymer as you put more load on it? • Did your band break? Why? • Explain (using a diagram) what is happening to the polymer molecules inside the band, as you added more load.
