  2. Andrew Jackson • Andrew Jackson founded the modern American political party • Called the Democratic-Republicans • He shaped it into the modern Democratic party

  3. Democratic-Republican party • Main objective was to eliminate elitism and mobilize the masses of all people

  4. Martin Van Buren • Was vice president to Jackson, succeeded him as president • Van Buren wanted Democratic-Republicans to see their opposing party, who were the Whigs

  5. The Whigs • The Whig party only won presidency when they elected well-known military heroes, such as William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor • The Whig party had noble statesmen Henry Clay and Daniel Webster

  6. Unification of the Whigs • The Whigs had two distinct wings- Northern Industrialists and Southern Planters. • They were unified by the Democratic policies they opposed rather than the issues they agreed on
