The Rise of the Whigs • Whig Coalition (Clay, Webster,- leftovers of the Republicans and aging Federalists) • Internal Improvements- cautious westward expansion: federal power • Webster, Clay & Calhoun • Democrats- limit federal power, attacked privilege and aristocracy • Locofocos: most extreme of the democrats- attack monopolies • Anti-Masons (Know Nothings): connected to Whigs because Jackson and Van Buren were Freemasons.
Election of 1836 • “Favorite Sons”- strategy was to divide the electorate regionally and send the election to the House where the Whigs could win. • Daniel Webster (MA) • Hugh White (TN) • William H. Harrison (OH) • Martin Van Buren • Regional popularity = 124 • Van Buren = 170
Martin Van Buren 1837-41 • The depression president- inherited Jackson’s policies of hard currency (specie circular)- $ sent to land speculation- drop in crop prices and international banking crisis • No safety net- private charity; worst depression (until the Great Depression) • Independent Treasury Act 1840 (a government bank- eventually passed). No private banks would have government money.
Election of 1840 • Whigs- jugular- beat the Democrats at their own game • Convention & Platform- Whigs adopted no platform, nominated a war hero and appealed to emotions rather issues. • Slogans, Symbols, & Songs • The political rally • E.C. Booze
Results • Harrison 234 • Van Buren 60 • “Shawnee Curse” • “The doctors, after blistering and “cupping” him, administered violent emetics and cathartics; then switched to opium, camphor, and brandy; finally, in desperation, administered Indian medicine men’s remedies such as crude petroleum and snakeweed.”
