Each area director will prepare a job description and send it to the regional director. • b. The job description should include responsibilities in the following areas: International Council, regional council, area council, area conference, and staff. • c. It should describe the scope and specific areas of decision responsibilities.
Variety of AD job descriptions • Should we develop a generic job description for all ADs? Why or why not? • Can you just adopt the job description of the previous AD? Why or why not?
The problem of unclear expectations • The leader is criticized for failing to do something that he did not know was his responsibility • The leader is criticized for doing something that he considered to be his responsibility to do • The leader is criticized for failing to do something when he thought he could accomplish the same result by a different method • The leader is criticized for not accomplishing certain results, although he thought he had faithfully done what was required of him. • A good job description that clearly states both areas of responsibility and measureable outcomes will do much to avoid these problems
Using your job description • It needs to be regularly reviewed and revised • Project Impact findings - only 32% of field leaders said their job descriptions had been updated within the last year. • How can we make sure that our job description actually guides our leadership behaviour?
A good job description answers these essential questions: • What is the primary purpose for this position? • Who is this person's supervisor? • For what areas is the person responsible? • What outcomes are expected of the person? • How will we know whether we have achieved these outcomes? • How much time is the person expected to give to these responsibilities? • How long is a "term" for this position? • How, when and by whom will feedback be offered to the person in this position on his performance?
Should the area director have other ministry responsibilities? • Project Impact - Many Leaders have too Many Roles • 72% of the field leaders reporting that they have two or more jobs, spending 29 hours a week or less in their field leader responsibilities • Bottom line: leaders must be empowered and released to focus on leading well.
