  2. PERSONAL ASSISTANT/EXTRA HELP • Personal Assistant position can be divided into two categories, floaters and or personal aides. Hours are as follows: • Floater: • 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. • 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. • 6:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m. • 12:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. • Personal Aide: • Times are dependent on individual student needs.

  3. RESPONSIBILITIES OF PERSONAL ASSISTANT • Assist and administer to the needs of the student residents with physical disabilities particularly with regard to Activities of Daily Living (ADL) . ADL’s include but are not limited to bathing, showering, shaving, hair shampooing, grooming, feeding, brushing teeth, clipping nails, dressing, applying external or condom catheters for the purpose of draining from the bladder. May also be expected to perform bowel programs for the residents to aid in elimination. • Implement the ADL principles and techniques as outlined in the training provided by a trained medical professional hired by DRES and the individual student residents. • Keep all medical information about the residents with disabilities confidential unless the condition constitutes a risk to life and safety, in which medical conditions are to be reported to Beckwith Administration staff and/or appropriate medical professionals.

  4. RESPONSIBILITIES OF PERSONAL ASSISTANT CONT. • Practice safety techniques and principles in all matters related to the care and daily living of the residents with disabilities. • Establish and maintain schedules with individual residents and staff. Keep the Beckwith Administrative Team and the residents with disabilities informed of all scheduling changes. • Record all hours worked, assume that the proper verification signature is on the timesheets, and assure that timesheets are received by the Management Team at the appropriate times. • Floaters and night clerks must keep a log of activities. The log will be used as a means of communication between floaters on different shifts and the Beckwith Administration Team. • Personal assistants must secure replacements in the event that they are unable to cover a scheduled shift. The Beckwith Administrative Team must be informed of any change in scheduled service.

  5. NIGHT FLOATER RESPONSIBILITIES • Check in responsibilities: • Perform the same check in procedures as the Floaters. • Obtain instructions from the RA on duty. • General Responsibilities: • Adhering to the same responsibilities as Floaters. • Performing Security Rounds 4 times per shift at 1am, 3am, 5am, and 7am that include: • Turning off unnecessary lights in hallways, lounge, and cafeteria. • Directing repairs to the Director and/and or Associate Director. • Assisting students with required turns (defined as assisting the student to reposition at a preset time to allow for avoidance of pressure sores).

  6. FLOATER SERVICES • Check in responsibilities: • Arrive ten minutes prior to each scheduled shift • Sign-in duty log book. Include name, date, and time worked. • Check status of emergency phone battery, prox i-card, and pager. • Review the Duty log with the Floater of prior shift. • Post their name on the dry-erase board located on the first floor. • Verify student needs with floater from preceding shift.

  7. FLOATER RESPONSIBILITIES • General Responsibilities: • Assist students with urgent care activities including but not limited to: assistance with winter wear, class preparation, toileting, transfers, and preparation of snacks, and administering medication. Beckwith residents are to make other arrangements for items that include; early morning and evening showers and bowel programs, shopping, laundry, and studying, reading, writing, and typing activities. • Providing back-up primary PA care in the event that a primary PA can not be located. • Responding to emergency pager, or phone call for students needing assistance, and are unable to come to you. • Remaining at the floater/night clerk station throughout each shift, unless assisting a student. • Maintaining the Beckwith Duty Log and signing in on the Staff Board. • Remaining on premises while on duty. • Contacting the appropriate medical personnel in the event of an emergency. PA’s are PROHIBITED from performing invasive services.

  8. BACK-UP POLICY • Personal Assistants are allotted one excused absence before dismissal. Unexcused absence is defined as a missed shift or work time where PA did not contact Beckwith Administrative staff or the resident and did not secure a replacement. • Personal assistants must secure a replacement for their scheduled shifts in the event of an absence. Floaters are instructed to contact Beckwith administrative staff at least 2 hours before their shift if they have an emergency and are unable to fill their shift. • In the event the PA found a replacement substitute a yellow substitute form is to be filled out prior to the shift and both employees are to sign it and post it on bulletin board above the floater desk.

  9. DISMISSAL • Violations that are caused by warnings that could be followed by dismissal include: • Minor insubordination • Disrespect for fellow employees and/or residents • Use of work time for something other than work • Unsatisfactory work performance • Repeated tardiness • Malicious damage to property • Indecent behavior, including sexual harassment • Absenteeism

  10. LIFE SAFETY TEAM • Life Safety Officer (LSO): • Director of BRSS • Associate Director of BRSS • Disability Specialist • Disability Advocates • Emergency Responder # 1 (ER#1): • Floater

  11. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES • FIRE • First floor public areas: Everyone in any of the first floor public areas that are mobile should exit the building as quickly as possible. • First floor residents: Residents with disabilities who are in immobile should remain in their rooms with the doors and windows closed. A member of the emergency responder staff will come around and shut rooms down to protect students from any fire or smoke that may be spreading from other areas of the building. Emergency Responder #1 will remove the student from the room that triggered the alarm, and the student in the adjoining room from the area.

  12. IN CASE OF FIRE • Second floor residents: The elevator is NOT to be used in the event of a fire. Residents with disabilities who are in chairs should close their room doors and turn on the lights to their rooms. Emergency Responder # 1 will remove the student from the room that triggered the alarm, and the student in the adjoining room from the area. • ALL OTHER PERSONAL ASSISTANT STAFF ARE TO MEET AT THE FIRE PANEL ON THE FIRST FLOOR AND RECEIVE DIRECTIONS FROM THE LIFE SAFETY OFFICER.

  13. EMERGENCY RESPONDER #1 • The ER # 1 will proceed to the room of the triggered alarm and check for fire, closing doors in the hallway on the way to the room and the triggered alarm. • If the ER # 1 does not find a fire, an all clear is to be given over the radios, but the ER # 1 is to continue closing doors as a precaution in the hallway. • Should s/he find a fire, the ER # 1 is to alert the other staff members via radio as to the specific location. • The ER # 1 will remove the individual located in the room which triggered the alarm and the student in the adjoining room to the opposite hallway immediately. Other Emergency Response staff will be directed to assist the ER # 1 in evacuating residents from the rooms in potential danger. • The ER # 1 will have to make quick decisions; keeping in mind the most important thing to do to protect the students is to close doors between them and a fire.

  14. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES • Tornado • In the event of a “Take Cover” signal the Administrative staff is to be notified. Students and staff should listen for the three minute blast from the E.S.D.A. warning siren and begin moving toward the first floor hallways. • The Life Safety Officer with the assistance of the Emergency Responder #1, are responsible for closing room doors, windows,, and blinds, checking to see how many students are in bed, and assuring that all other students are proceeding to the designated safety area. • All students are to move to the first floor hallways. They are to remain in the hallways until the “All Clear” is given by the LSO. • Students who are in bed are given the choice to get up or to be covered with blankets to protect them from any debris.

  15. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES • In the event of a medical emergency students are to contact 9-911 and arrange for immediate medical assistance. McKinley Health Center provides 24 hour nurse coverage by calling 333-2700. McKinley also offers a direct line service for students with disability related illnesses at 244-5309. • Information regarding programs and services can be found at http://www.mckinley.uiuc.edu/. • If transportation is required BECKWITH EMPLOYEES ARE NOT LICENSED TO TRANSPORT RESIDENTS.

  16. LAUNDRY ROOM, COMPUTER LAB, AND PARKING POLICIES • Under no circumstances are non-residents allowed to use these facilities. • Parking is limited to and reserved for students with disabilities and Beckwith Floater staff members. The hang tag for the Floater staff will be signed for at the mini-reception desk.
