ICLEI’s Initiative aims to 1. Substantially increase the generation and application of local renewable energy sources through: • Model Communities around the world • Replication of good practices • Strong international network of local governments 2. Put Local Renewables on the international agenda through: • Networking with organisations and partners • Events and projects

Model communities Need to demonstrate commitment for being selected • Local policy development - Develop a renewables policy- City Council to adopt • Public participation - Involve stakeholders from the beginning - Establish local fora • LR Resource/ Information Centre - Establish and operate capacity centres - to provide information and advice - to demonstrate and promote RE & EE technologies Set a national/ international example Share results and encourage others to replicate Document & monitor progress
Success in India • Bhubaneswar & Nagpur selected • 7 Satellite cities involved, more interested • Stakeholders’ group identified in both cities • Renewables Resource Centre established • Local energy reports and policies in preparation • Various local and national training and awareness activities • Links to Indian Renewable Energy ministry and state governments, more projects in preparation • Report on RE in India (model for other countries)
Success in Brazil • Bétim as model, Porto Alegre, Salvador, São Paulo, Volta Redonda cooperate • Strategic partnerships established, with State Prefecture, Electric and Housing Companies • Porto Alegre: legislation to promote solar heating in public buildings • São Paulo: bill of law to the city council to foster use of solar water heating in new large scale housing and public buildings • Volta Redonda: interdepartmental commission to foster EE and RE initiatives
ICLEI’s Initiative offers 1. For Local Governments • Methodology for local action • Guidance from ICLEI teams • Exchange with colleagues, experts, governments and international actors • a web-based platform for collection of good practice and success-promising implementation. 2. For international institutions • Reference cases and advanced local partners • Locations for investments • Study fields for replication
