  2. Introduction • Greece is a country in south east Europe and borders Bulgaria, Macedonia and Albania. The capital of Greece is Athens. • Greece’s longest river is the Maritsa. The largest mountain range in Greece is Pindus. • Its population is 11.2million. Greece joined European Union in 1981 and uses the Euro as it’s currency like the majority of Europe.

  4. History • Ancient Greece philosophy had an influence on modern philosophy and science. Some well-known philosophers of Ancient Greece were Plato , Socrates and Homer. Parthenon Plato • The Parthenon is an ancient Greek temple located in Athens and was built between 447BC & 438BC. It is the most important surviving buildings of classical Greece and is a symbol of Ancient Greece.

  5. Sport • Greece is the birthplace of the Olympic Games, first recorded in 776 BC. • In total the Greek athletes have won 146 medals in 15 different sports in the Summer Olympics Games. • The Greek National soccer team won the 2004 UEFA European Football Championships.

Industry & Food • More than 50% of Greek industry is located in the Greater Athens area with agriculture, tourism, construction and shipping being the main economic sectors. • Greek cuisine is based on goat meat and mutton. Fish dishes are also popular. Olive oil is also produced in large quantities.

Religion & Culture • Greece’s religion varies throughout the country 98% of the countries religion is Orthodoxy, 1.3% of it is Islam and 0.7% is Catholicism. • Easter is by far the most important celebration for the Greeks, even Christmas comes second. • Bread in Greece, especially in villages, is considered a gift of God. • The word music comes from the Greek word musiki, meaning all the arts of the nine Muses.
